The allotment community members ages range from 1 year old to the eldest plot holder being 97 years old so the safety of members accessing the allotments was vital.

Kate Williams site representative and honorary secretary for the allotments said:

“The allotment community site offers exercise, the chance to grow fruit, veg and the opportunity to educate the children of the families on our site of where their food comes from. The biggest thing it helps with is positive mental health.”

Honouring our commitment to help our local communities we arranged to have 100T of Type 1 aggregate delivered to the allotments. Residents were extremely grateful for the goodwill gesture and look forward to safely accessing their beloved allotments.

Claire Parsons our Environmental Manager visited the allotment and said:

“I met Kate, Helen and Alan from the Kenton Lane allotment team and they were very community spirited people with a passion for growing fruit and veg! They really appreciated the support that JSM gave them and are looking forward to their access road being re-built using the Type 1 JSM donated.”

Following the delivery of the aggregates Kate Williams said:

“Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to JSM for coming to the rescue of local allotment holders, whose site road was unfit for purpose. Following JSM’s generous contribution to making our roadway safer for our plot holders and families ”

In line with our commitment to being an employer of choice, we have a community grant scheme open to all employees at JSM.

We’ve proudly sponsored JSM employee Padraic Garvin through our community grant scheme. A group of students from St Michaels School undertook a 10 mile hike across the Ashridge Estate.

Student Katie said: “Huge thank you to JSM for their sponsorship”

The Mighty Hike was taken on by the group to help the school raise over £9,000 towards their annual trip to Lourdes.

We received our 9th consecutive Gold Achievement Award in the construction industry, demonstrating our dedication to ensuring our staff, clients, contractors and members of the public get home safely at the end of every working day.

The RoSPA Health and Safety Awards is the largest occupational health and safety awards programme in the UK. Now into its 68th year, the Awards have almost 2,000 entries every year, covering nearly 50 countries and a reach of over seven million employees. The programme recognises organisations’ commitment to continuous improvement in the prevention of accidents and ill health at work, looking at entrants’ overarching health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.

While most awards are non-competitive – recognising individual organisations’ achievements – competitive awards are presented in 20 industry sectors and for specialist areas of health and safety management.

Mick Barrett, JSM Group SHEQ Director, said:

“I would like to also to thank and congratulate all line management and their teams for their support and input in helping JSM achieve this award, without their commitment it would not be possible for us to implement the processes and procedures that have helped us to achieve the goals we have.”

Family Action distribute presents to families in challenging circumstances across the country. For many of these children, the present they receive from the Toy Appeal is the only one they will have this Christmas.

Claire Parsons, our Environmental Manager organised the appeal and helped to drop off a number of presents to the Children’s Centre in Letchworth. They will distribute the gifts on our behalf to local disadvantaged children.

The Family Action team said:

“With your help we have been able to provide toys and gifts to over 11,000 children and families this Christmas. We can’t thank you enough for your incredible support.”

In addition to this, we’ve also donated to the Kids Out Giving Tree which distributes Christmas presents to children fleeing domestic abuse.

The Food Bank recognise that ending hunger is about more than food. They provide practical support to people in crisis to tackle the root causes that lock people into poverty and build their resilience so that they are less likely to need a food bank in the future. Their vision is a borough without the need for foodbanks.

This opportunity has led to collaboration and development of relationships between Barking Food Bank and JSM and local communities of Essex and London who use the Food Bank will benefit.

Claire Parsons our Environmental Manager organised the day and said,

“The JSM volunteering team – Oliver Wales, Nadia Amrane, George Galloway & I exceeded the Food Bank Operations Manager expectations by putting in the hours to deliver and re-stock the Barking Foodbank, meaning that for the next two weeks, their volunteers can distribute complete food allocations including non-food items, which will mean a lot, to many people in need.

Funmi Ikele Operations Manager at Barking Food Bank said:

“I am ecstatic at how much work the team managed to get done today. Demand for the food boxes is higher than ever and donations are at there lowest. Any support provided is much appreciated and we thank JSM for the support.”

JSM Employees can spend two days a year volunteering in their local communities as part of our social value offering in line with our One Planet Action Plan, Sustainability Strategy.

We are immensely proud to have awarded our first Community Grant to ‘My Mito Mission’ a cause incredibly close to the heart of a JSM employee. The Mito Mission funds research into various mitochondiral diseases to help find a cure.

Jason Baker (JSM Employee) said:

“We can’t thank JSM enough for their kind donation to our ‘Family Fun Day’ & Football event in memory of our boys Ronni (aged 10) and Freddi (aged 5 days), both lost to Mitochondrial Disease. Had they still been here with us, they would have loved what we put together. JSM’s kind donation funded the football kits, arm bands, raffle prizes, promotional flyers, mascots and even the footballs used on the day. The remainder is being donated to the charity directly.

The event, which took place on Saturday September 23rd, was to raise money for a charity called My Mito Mission which funds research into various mitochondrial diseases. We hope that one day a cure will be found so no family has to go through what we have. We are so proud to say that we had 400+ attendees and in the 11 weeks since we lost Ronni, we have raised over £11,000 and we can’t wait to continue to raise as much as possible.”

All JSM employees are invited to apply for funding that supports both communities and employees in line with JSM Group’s vision of being an employer of choice and to be the most trusted utility infrastructure services provider.

The key values of the Armed Forces Covenant are:

  • Members of the Armed Forces Community should not face disadvantages arising from their service in the provision of public and commercial services.
  • In some circumstances special provision may be justified, especially for those who have given the most, such as the injured or bereaved.

Stuart Wiltshire, CEO at JSM Group, said:

“We have a number of ex-armed forces employees thriving at JSM. Joining the covenant highlights to the community that we are committed and willing to support them as an employer.”

As we continue to focus on being an employer of choice, we have committed to promote the Armed Forces activity and employment opportunities at JSM Group. We will provide employment support to members of the Armed Forces Community by offering special leave, ongoing mental health support and education/skill development. We will also ensure communications, engagement and outreach through charitable activities and sponsorship if appropriate to provide ongoing support and encourage others to sign-up.

EIDA works with employers to help them implement effective internal policies on domestic abuse, as well as providing awareness and signposting to up to date resources.

We are committed to raising awareness of the terrible impact of domestic abuse, to supporting our employees affected by domestic abuse, as well as to encouraging other employers to take action.

Emma Dormer, Group HR Director, said:

“JSM Group is proud to join EIDA. Imagine if every employer made their employees aware of the signs of domestic abuse, provided appropriate support to their employees and told them how to seek relevant, effective help. That sort of wide-scale, societal impact requires informed action by business leaders, supported by EIDA with their guidance and resources.

“We are proud that JSM group is making a positive social impact by joining EIDA’s network.”

Susan Bright, CEO of The Employer’s Initiative on Domestic Abuse, added:

“We are delighted to welcome the JSM team to our network, [particularly to expand our network deeper into the construction industry]. The important role that employers can play in tackling domestic abuse has become even more apparent during the Covid pandemic. The commitment from employers in supporting their own employees whilst also inspiring other employers to do the same will help us to achieve our vision of every UK employer taking action on domestic abuse.”

Through awareness generation, building relationships and the sharing of best practice, JSM Group and EIDA are hoping to support a systematic change to the way domestic abuse is handled.
