2792 – Head of MV/HV Design

We are looking for a Head of MV/HV Design to lead and manage the design activities related to the electrical and civil elements of MV/HV substations, cables, and overhead lines (OHL). In addition, an experience of managing design teams; including sub-contractors and service providers, as well as large scale project management is essential. You’ll enjoy building relationships and collaborating with team members, be proactive and driven, and thrive on helping to deliver major power projects within a vibrant industry.

As part of our team you’ll be overseeing a range of services from feasibility design through to the preparation of technical specifications, production of construction drawings and design compliance audit throughout the design process on all elements of MV/HV primary plant and substation configuration.

Skills and Experience Required:

  • You will enjoy working in a team environment and using your expertise to guide other members of staff. You’ll also have the desire and ability to deliver and manage work either as a lead or part of a team.
  • You will have strong leadership skills, and excellent quantitative and problem-solving skills.
  • A positive attitude to health and safety (especially within the design process).
  • Bachelor’s Degree and/ or Masters/PhD in Electrical Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer with membership of IET.
  • Proven technical experience in the design and application of HV/MV power system plant up to and including 400kV, including an understanding of other engineering disciplines (civil, protection & control).

Role and Responsibilities include:

  • Day-to-day management and coordination of design teams including HV/MV Substation, Protection & Control, Cable, Civil Engineers and CAD Technicians.
  • Coordination of inputs being provided by other departments such as survey/geotechnical, transport and environmental.
  • Financial project control and reporting.
  • Controlling agreed project schedules.
  • Ensuring the design meets all the client’s requirements.
  • Conducting engineering reviews and approvals of design drawings, reports, construction programmes and other deliverables; quality assurance.
  • Attending and Chairing Design Reviews, Hazard Reviews, Option Selection and other related meetings.
  • In accordance with CDM 2015 Construction (Design and Management), you’ll plan, manage and monitor the pre-construction phase including any survey works and co-ordinate matters relating to Health and Safety from appointment through to main works contact award.
