On 21st May 2025, a team of dedicated JSM Group Ltd employees rolled up their sleeves and volunteered their time and energy to support the Ealing Beaver Project – a pioneering urban rewilding initiative. Working alongside project co-founder Elliot Newton and Urban Rewilding Officer Digby Wheeler, the team contributed to vital habitat maintenance and public access improvements at the site.

The day began with the restoration of an overgrown access path. Using tools such as bowsaws, loppers, spades, and digging forks, the team cleared excess vegetation and encroaching trees. The aim was to create a safer, more accessible route for the public to reach the beaver ponds, while also discouraging use of unofficial and potentially damaging pathways.

In addition to the pathway, two JSM volunteers went above and beyond by donning chest waders and stepping into the water to remove litter and debris from the beaver enclosure. Items such as shopping trolleys, drink cans, and overgrown vegetation were cleared to ensure the water remained clean and safe for the resident beavers. While beavers are naturally adept at managing their environment – a fascinating fact we learned during our time on site – heavier waste items require human intervention.

By the end of the day, the team had successfully created a welcoming new pathway for local residents and improved the water quality within the beaver habitat. It was a rewarding and inspiring experience for all involved, and we look forward to one day returning to continue supporting this incredible project.

It was fantastic to have the brilliant team from JSM join us at Paradise Fields, home of the Ealing Beaver Project. Their hard work made a real impact; from building a vital new footpath to help us manage our ‘beaver deceiver’ water control system, to clearing reeds and removing trolleys from the pond to improve beaver viewing. We even explored the site together, sharing insights into beaver ecology and their incredible activities. A huge thank you to JSM for their generous support. We hope to see you again on more rewilding projects across London, helping nature and people thrive together.

said Elliot Newton, Co-Founder.

JSM Group Ltd. chose to volunteer for this initiative not only because of its environmental significance but also because of its strong community impact. The project’s goal is to create a safe and sustainable habitat for beavers while helping to prevent flooding in the local area – benefiting both wildlife and the surrounding community. At JSM, we are passionate about giving back. Supporting our communities is at the core of who we are. Since 2021, JSM has proudly contributed over 351 hours of volunteer work, a testament to our ongoing commitment to making a meaningful difference.

As part of our Community Grant scheme, designed to support causes close to our employees’ hearts, we’re proud to back Kent Crusaders.

Last week, a group of JSM volunteers had the privilege of supporting Cranborne Primary School with vital maintenance work and what an incredibly rewarding two days it was!

Our team transformed the school’s playground into a brighter, more welcoming space. We repaired and repainted outdoor picnic benches, turning them from worn and unsafe into cheerful, safe spots where children can enjoy their break times.

We also tackled key health and safety upgrades to two emergency exits, replacing steps and a wheelchair ramp, all built using sustainable, repurposed wood. We’re proud to have delivered improvements that make a real difference, while keeping sustainability at the heart of our work.

Amanda Lehmann, School Business Manager, Cranborne Primary School said;

At a time when school budgets are under pressure, the financial savings from JSM’s generous contribution mean that we can now invest more into resources that directly benefit our children. We are truly grateful for their hard work, generosity, and the positive impact they’ve had on our school community.

“Thank you to Constance Dickie MCIM, Claire Parsons and the whole JSM team for coming to our rescue! We look forward to working with you again this Summer.

A huge thank you to Cranborne Primary School for the warm welcome, and to our amazing JSM team for showing what community spirit looks like in action.

As part of our Community Grant scheme, set up to help support causes our employees are involved in, we are proud to contribute to the Norsemen FC U15 side.

A local grassroots youth football side, Norsemen required funding for tour tops ahead of playing in a tournament.

Norsemen tour manager, Natalia Kelly, said:

We are extremely grateful to JSM. This will be the boys’ last season together so the tops will hold special significance for players and parents alike.

JSM Group Services is proud to champion our communities and contribute to meaningful change. We are excited to continue our Community Grant initiatives and work alongside local organisations to build a brighter future.

At JSM, a leading utility infrastructure provider, our success hinges on talented people who push boundaries, nurture others,  and deliver outstanding results across multi-utility, power infrastructure engineering, and telecoms infrastructure projects day after day. Few embody those qualities better than Louise Amphlett, our longest-serving commercial team member and the only female Quantity Surveyor in the business.

Over the past twelve years, Louise has risen from an entry-level administrative post to become one of our most trusted commercial leads, guiding multi-million-pound power-infrastructure projects and inspiring colleagues across civil engineering and digital infrastructure at every stage of their careers.

How does perseverance turn into long-term career progress at JSM?

Louise started with JSM as a Technical Assistant and progressed to a fully qualified Quantity Surveyor due to perseverance, hard work, and dedication. Her quality of work is exemplary.

Grant Packham, Group Commercial Director, JSM Group

Louise’s career trajectory is proof that grit and ambition open doors within engineering. In 2015, already juggling demanding project duties, she enrolled part-time at university to pursue a BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying. Five years later, she graduated with First-Class honours, having gained hands-on experience every step of the way. That blend of academic excellence and real-world know-how now underpins her leadership on complex frameworks for key clients.

How do we deliver commercial certainty across critical infrastructure projects?
Whether overseeing live site changes or negotiating variations, Louise is relentless in protecting project value across our full turnkey services:

  • Proactive change management – Meticulous capture of on-site variations ensures accurate, timely client communication and approval
  • Robust risk management – Clear processes minimise commercial exposure and safeguard margins
  • Data-driven forecasting – Louise’s operational tracker, adopted company-wide, now monitors every project from award to final payment

The results speak for themselves: strengthened stakeholder trust and repeat business with blue-chip clients across civil engineering, utility services, and infrastructure provider frameworks, amongst others.

How do diversity and new ideas drive better outcomes in infrastructure delivery?

“Diversity of thought plays a huge role in creating a thriving workplace, particularly when the workplace changes month on month or even week on week due to the operational nature of our business. Louise plays a pivotal role in providing innovative solutions across our project portfolio.” Constance Dickie, Corporate Affairs Director, JSM Group

In a traditionally male-dominated sector spanning civil engineering, electrical engineering, and telecoms infrastructure, Louise’s presence challenges norms and enriches decision-making. Her ability to look at entrenched problems from a different angle has unlocked more efficient delivery models, leaner reporting cycles, and collaborative commercial-operational workflows that benefit every stakeholder, from on-site teams to board-level sponsors.

Why is development important at every stage of a career at JSM?

“I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Louise throughout her journey at JSM, from her early days as a Commercial Administrator to her current role as a lead Quantity Surveyor. At each stage, she’s shown an unwavering commitment to growth and excellence. It’s been incredibly rewarding to support her development over the years, and now to see her mentoring others with the same care and dedication. Louise is a brilliant example of how investing in people at every stage of their career pays dividends for the whole business.” Jack Whitlock, Associate Director – Electrical Operations, JSM Group

Louise believes talent grows fastest when knowledge is shared. She actively mentors graduate surveyors, apprentices, and newly-hired commercial staff, tailoring one-to-one sessions on contract law, cost forecasting, and negotiation. Colleagues credit her calm, approachable style with accelerating their confidence and competence.

How is JSM preparing for the future of utility infrastructure?
As JSM scales its power-infrastructure portfolio and renewable energy connections, to meet Britain’s net-zero ambitions, Louise’s expertise will be instrumental in translating strategic vision into sustainable, commercially sound delivery across utility infrastructure frameworks.

Her story, of continual self-investment, innovation, and inclusive leadership, mirrors the culture we strive to cultivate across our organisation.

Thank you, Louise, for showing what’s possible when dedication meets opportunity.

Data centres are now classified as critical national infrastructure – are we doing enough to get them connected? We’ll be joined by other industry experts to discuss this at our roundtable on 23 April 2025. The modern world’s energy demands are evolving rapidly, driven by the rise of data centres, battery plants, and renewable energy projects. These developments are placing unprecedented pressure on network capacity and grid infrastructure. At the same time, speculative practices, such as “Zombie Projects” where planning approvals for solar farms or grid connections are obtained with no intention of timely implementation, are exacerbating these challenges. Such projects often lead to grid congestion and delay the progress of critical infrastructure. In conjunction with Building Magazine, JSM is hosting a roundtable discussion on 23 April 2025 with other industry experts to explore who are the winners and losers, and will the UK end up with what it needs to meet the climate challenge and demand for digital services (data storage and AI) as well as housing and commercial growth?

We will be looking at:

Understanding network capacity challenges

Highlight the increasing demand for grid connections due to rapid growth in data centres and battery plants, which are pivotal for a digitised and renewable energy future.

Discuss the implications of “Zombie Projects,” where planning approvals for solar farms or grid connections are sought as speculative investments rather than active developments.

Example: Applications for approvals without a clear timeline for implementation.

Impact on grid congestion and delays for critical infrastructure projects.

Identifying and prioritising critical infrastructure

Examine the importance of prioritising projects based on clear milestones and timelines.

Example: Linking grid connection priority to demonstrated project progress (e.g., secured funding, and planning consents).

Explore frameworks for assessing the criticality of infrastructure projects to energy security and societal needs.

Example: Data centres as essential for the digital economy; battery plants for energy storage and grid stabilisation.

Policy and regulatory strategies

Discuss the role of policy in mitigating “Zombie Projects.”

Consider regulatory changes to streamline grid connection processes for projects with proven milestones.

Technological and collaborative solutions

Highlight innovative solutions to optimise grid capacity:

Grid management technologies and dynamic load balancing.

Collaborative approaches between utilities, developers, and governments to improve transparency in grid allocation.

We are proud to announce that JSM Group Services Ltd. has officially been granted Ofcom Code Powers as of 10th October 2024. This achievement marks a significant milestone in our journey towards expanding and enhancing the services we provide to our clients.

The Electronic Communications Code, as set out in Schedule 3A of the Communications Act 2003, grants JSM Group the ability to streamline processes involved in the installation and maintenance of electronic communications networks. This will simplify our approach to delivering essential services, particularly during the installation of power cables and infrastructure.

David Fennessy, Comms Managing Director says:

Obtaining The Ofcom Code of Powers is testament to the evolution of JSM Group Services Ltd. This will be a key area for our future growth plans by diversifying our client base to meet their expansion plans. It will further complement our ambition to continuously improve our service offering(s) for both the client and public.

As part of our sustainability and environmental commitments, this new status allows us to install duct and fibre during power cable trenching works. This not only reduces street works disruption but also delivers cost savings to our clients, while offering greater flexibility for network access and use.

This advancement will particularly benefit larger projects such as Data Centres, where extensive cable routes are essential. The combination of power and fibre installation in a single project will enable savings for Data Centre Operators and those offering fibre services.

With the flexibility to install and maintain electronic communications networks more efficiently, we aim to provide an even higher standard of service to all our clients, while minimising the impact of construction activities on the public.

JSM Group’s newly granted Code Powers strengthen our commitment to being a trusted partner in the construction and utilities sectors. As we continue to grow and evolve, we remain dedicated to fostering collaboration and innovation across all our projects.
